about

Twenty years. It was meant to be much longer. I'd discovered the Windbreakers twenty vears before that. Soon after we connected I asked Bob if he could play a guitar solo on one of my records. He accepted as long as he could sing a line too. After contributing to a Roy Loney record I was producing Bob announced he was now a member of Donovan's Brain. I thought that was a grand idea.

In 2016 Bobby decided it was time to start work on a solo album. That would mean his songwriting would be dedicated to that. I encouraged him and offered to help in any way I could. I collected all the demos and sketches he'd sent me over the years to send back over to him. Along the way I found You Should Have Known Better. It had been offered up for Turned Up Later, but seems to have been forgotten.

Let It Go was another that Bob gave to the Brain. An instrumental version was recorded. Not long after, Bobby found his original demo with lyrics. It's the original DB backing track with Ric and Tom that he used for his version. A few unfinished song ideas started for Sings And Plays were handed over to me to complete. Bobby needed music and lyrics to come together as a complete idea. If that didn't happen, he just moved on.

I was more than a little surprised when the album arrived in May 2022. Bobby said it was finished. He had the final running order and a simple cover worked out. There were no plans for a release. It was just for himself and his friends.

This is Bobby's gift to you, his friends.
